DJs Brothers Boogaloo & Sister Vendetta

boogaloovendetta2.jpg

Brothers Boogaloo and Sister Vendeta always spin as a couple: as Brothers Boogaloo or as Brother Boogaloo and Sister Vendetta. We like to play wild music that makes people forget themselves and loosen up. We like them to dance like bunnies.

Real name?
Leendert Masselink, Vi Mahabali, Martin Draax.

DJ name?
Brothers Boogaloo and Sister Vendetta.

How did you choose it?
Boogaloo, as we learned to know it, was a certain kind of raw soul music that was played in the 1960s in New York. It was all about the latinos, loving black soul music, mixing it with the grooves from their own cultural background – and calling it Boogaloo. It is a confusing name, however, since two other trends in music are called Boogaloo as well: a certain kind of easy-swinging latino music that sounds like Herb Alpert to me and a rock 'n' roll variety. Vendetta is a name we chose because of the associative link with Blaxploitaton, a 60s/70s film genre with outstanding soundtracks.

Vinyl junkie or CDs?
Vinyl, obviously.

How many records/CDs do you have?
About 2000 LPs and 1000 CDs and about 300 singles. But the right answer would be: We're still a few short.

What style of music do you play?
We play mostly 60s-based exotica, boogaloo soul, stomping, soundtracks, beat and grind. Furthermore, we like to fill it up with newer and older records, as long as it's wild and recorded by musicians or wannabe musicians. As long as it has a high voetjesvandevloer credibility; is unknown by many; and is funky (but not funk), and wild – we like to play it. The floor gets on fire regularly at de Nieuwe Anita and Wilhelmina and at other parties, if we are invited. Expect Horns and Hammonds! Some of our music was described in vintage times as Geraasch van bandelooze neegers. So, as a youngster, you knew where you wanted to be.

Where do you DJ?
Everywhere we're asked to. We've been playing quite often in the Nieuwe Anita and Wilhelmina, where we also played with the band, The Spinshots.

Your ideal DJ gig?
Anywhere they don't request Madonna after half a night of vintage trash.

Last record/CD you bought?
Let's Boogaloo (Two and Three), the Kinks Controversy (again), Holly Golightly's Laugh it Up, a Gospel compilation and a King's Singers single (Back in the USSR a cappellahahaha)... sorry, bought them all together just a few hours ago.

Current musical obsession?
Original female singers.

Top 3 all-time dancefloor favourites?
Joe Bataan – Chicka Boom (recent version)
Yma Sumac – Yo Mambo
Jamo Thoma – Bahama Mama

Worst request?
'We would like to dance' usually followed by a request for techno or house by people who obviously can't dance.

Favourite record stores in Amsterdam?
Concerto, Distortion, Get records and Backbeat.

Favourite internet radio station
I go anywhere from www.hamsterclub.nl/dosanddonts.php

Do you have your own website?
www.draax.nl is for my designstudio, or check out www.illurama.nl (the other brother) or www.spinshots.web-log.nl which is the site of the most swinging band in the Netherlands. You'll get the idea, just surf around...
