DJ Satyr

satyr.jpg

DJ Satyr awakened on Earth under the kin of White Overtone Mirror, on a day out of time – the day of festival and dance, the annual leap-day in the 13-moon calendar of the Maya. As a child he was already fully aware of the fact that music could take one further away from Earth or deeper inside ourselves, than any man-made probe or border-crossing vehicle ever could. He planted a root on fertile DJ soil at the dawn of the 90s and been climbing the tree ever since; always a happy participant in the creation of the soundtrack to our voyage into bliss...

Real name?
Sanne... yes, I know. Story of my life: a boy next door was also called Sanne, and two other Sannes (a girl and a boy), were in my class in high school. Actually, in old, north eastern Dutch Sanne actually means 'the son of'. But to follow the tree to its roots, I'm named after a Dutch artist/photographer, a friend of my parents, whose name was – and still is – Sanne Sannes (male).

DJ name?
Satyr.

How did you choose It?
The fruit of a classical education. Mythology classes taught me that a Satyr is one of the messengers of Dionysos, God of the forest, of fertility, wine and dance. He sent the Satyr off to nearby villages to hypnotise the children with his music – which made them follow him back into the forest, share a pint of Dionysos' brew and dance in trance till broad daylight... that is as observed from an ancient, mystical point of view (Eleusis and other mysteries unravelled).

Vinyl junkie or CDs?
Used to be on a daily hunt for the black gold, until I saw a silver-blue light shimmering at the horizon – or was it the end of a tunnel? CD is the easiest and most affordable medium for small labels and independent artists in the Psychedelic scene. In fact, most of their music will never be pressed on vinyl. Same goes for an equally large pile of chillout. And besides that, 23 times the amount of music now fits in the same volume.
Personally, I'm very happy with the current CDJ technology – but if I had a choice, I'd rather use pitchable DAT players.

How many records/CDs do you have?
I stopped counting years ago, after reaching some sort of monumental four figure number... I'm actually reducing my stock at the moment so I can travels light; it also helps to reduce the occasional sentimental overload.

What style of music do you play?
I prefer to play Psychedelic Trance, Chillout & Spacebeats, from 0 to 161.8 BPM.

Where do you DJ?
Outside and indoor, day or night, and so far in Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, USA and all over the Netherlands. At the moment, my girlfriend Shaktycat and I represent Pixan Records, a new Psychedelic Trance label from Italy.

Your ideal DJ gig?
Grin: a full spectrum 24-hour outdoor set, from the first dawn to the next sunrise, from full Sun to full Moon... preferably on the beach of a tropical island, ocean in front of you, mountains and forests around... But if it's typhoon season out there, I'd just as easily settle for the coastline of Bahia for another Universo Paralello - paradise beach Brazil!

Last record/CD you bought?
OceLoT - Vector Selector (album on Dropout Productions, California/USA)

Current musical obsession?
Growing dedication to music production, the hermitage of a screenager.

Top 3 all-time dancefloor favourites?
At'sa hard one... today I'd say:

Neuron Compost - Izilop Pop (Gi'iwa productions, Aus, 2004)
Orbital - Halcyon (Internal, UK, 1992)
Infected Mushroom - The Gathering (whole album! BNE, Israel, 1999)

... but do ask me again tomorrow.

Worst request?
Here's a few I remember:

From the owner, the usual: "Could you start breaking it down? We'll be closing in five minutes."
From a friend, always unusual: "Could you play this track I made? It lasts 40 minutes."
From a visitor: a mimed yawn as she came up to the booth, just after the roughest track that night kicked in.

Favourite record stores in Amsterdam?
Ozmali, Distortion & Boudisque.

Do you have your own website?
Still 'working on' a decent one of my own, yet in the meantime, here's my online profile: http://goatrance.nl/artistinfo/view.php?id=1063048500
