DJ M-Cécile

mc.jpg

M-Cécile was brought up in a very classical environment as her mother is a professional classical singer. Amongst other things, this gave M-Cécile her a special sensitivity for melody. As a child, she also played the piano but, at the age of 14, started to play drums – and later took more specialised courses in drum rhythms (like Brazilian samba en batucada). Her background in combining melody and rhythm makes her unique in the way she mixes records. She's also one of the first female DJs in the world, having started in 1992. She's been through disco, 80s music and acid jazz. But it was in 1990, when she heard DJ Dimitri playing house music, that some great music had finally touched her again and a new passion was born. Today, she finds it important that musicians keep getting involved with electronic and house music and work together with the producers of today to continually push the boundaries of house music. She especially loves the combination of instruments played live with electronic music on vinyl. You can listen and download two or her mixes at www.luminaradio.com

Real name?
Marie-Cécile

DJ name?
M-Cécile

How did you choose It?
Speaks for itself.

Vinyl junkie or CDs?
For now... still vinyl but CDs mean you can bring a lot more music so... maybe one day?

How many records/CDs do you have?
About 3000.

What style of music do you play?
For a dance gig I'll play melodic, tribal, Latin-influenced tech-house. I also do lounge gigs but then I play more Brazilian, Latin, jazzy stuff. To get an impression of my tech-house set you can download two mixes at www.luminaradio.com

Where do you DJ?
I play in clubs, festivals, afterparties and all kinds of parties where I like to play and where they like me to play...

Your ideal DJ gig?
Playing together with my favourite DJ/producer/musician friends at a nice, atmospheric, decorated place with beautiful visuals which mesmerize all the different disciplines. Then the crowd have something to see and feel which brings togetherness, happiness and a harmonic vibe – and everybody goes home with a great, satisfied feeling.

Last record/CD you bought?
Second hand: D'Malicious - The Loup Garou E.P. (great record!)

Current musical obsession?
Getting my first release!

Top 3 all-time dancefloor favourites?
Mutant fight the Creature - Taho (Lumina)
Changing Shape - Omid a.k.a. 16B (Airtight)
Please Stay - Mekon featuring Marc Almond

Worst request?
Playing at places where there's nobody! Do your promotion I would say! Otherwise put on a CD instead of having a DJ! (Or...communicate.) For me the best way of playing is to have interaction with a crowd. Other worst requests include when people ask for ABBA or Anastacia.

Favourite record stores in Amsterdam?
Killa Cutz, Distortion, Rush Hour.

Favourite internet radio station
www.luminaradio.com
www.radio-activity.nl

Do you have your own website?
My agency does: www.laughingbuddha-music.com
