DJ Duck

djduckamsdjs.jpg

The creator of this site, DJ Duck (aka PiP), is an occasional DJ owing to her rather relentless day job as an arts journalist. She has a spot playing chillout music (her speciality) on internet radio station www.lounge-radio.com, but also plays at private parties, film screenings, theater openings and 'cool' weddings. Only one couple have got divorced out of seven. Not bad going... Notable highlights includes deejaying at the Rijksmuseum for Museum Night (N8), the Netherlands Film Festival in Utrecht, IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival) in Amsterdam and the Ja Zuster, Nee Zuster première party in Off-Corso, Rotterdam.

Real name?
Pip Farquharson

DJ name?
Duck

How did you choose It?
I was DJing at the Getto and one of the owners, John, asked me for my DJ name. I didn't have one. So he told me to pick an animal... This is the first one that popped into my head. In hindsight, perhaps I should have taken it more seriously...

Vinyl junkie or CDs?
Vinyl. CDs only when I can't get hold of something on vinyl.

How many records do you have?
900. Less is more.

How many CDs do you have?
Approximately 200.

What style of music do you play?
Film soundtracks/70s porn commercials, Sinatra-esque stuff, progressive funk, easy tune, 70s, lounge, danceable indie, contemporary tracks and absolutely no techno.

Where do you DJ?
I don't have a regular night as my day job keeps me pretty busy but I general play at one-off quirky club nights...

Your ideal DJ gig?
Playing at cultural events such as a film festivals or theater opening nights, in unusual locations... in my bedroom for friends or for lovers in the shower...

Last record/CD you bought?
Les Chanson des Perverts album (from the excellent Crippled Dick Hot Wax label in Germany).

Current musical obsession?
De-Phazz, plus The Real Tuesday Weld (watch out for them...).

Top 3 all-time dancefloor favourites?
The Child (DJ Alex Gopher), Big Love (Pete Heller), Triptico (The Gotan Project).

Worst request?
Could you turn the music down?

Favourite record stores in Amsterdam?
Concerto (huge choice, plenty of bargains), Get Records (super-friendly service and though it's small, a choice selection of vinyl) and Distortion (plenty of punk and indie). One reason I also love these stores is that they aren't patronising to women.
